Soraya Al Musri
Winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award
Zaghareet Magazine 2000 Golden Belly Awards
Producer: Starfest and Spring Mini (workshops)
Tribute to Danse Orientale and Dances of Passion (dance concerts)
Soraya has a background in all forms of dance, specifically ballet, tap and
jazz. Currently, and for the past 30 years, Middle Eastern Dance has been
her main focus.
Soraya originally studied dance at the Royal School of Ballet, London, England,
with training specifically in ballet. She became interested in Middle Eastern dance in
1975 and since then has trained intensively with various teachers and has taken master classes,
seminars and workshops throughout the United States developing her own style but also teaching
the various styles of Middle Eastern dance: Turkish, Arabic, Egyptian, Gypsy Rom and Greek.
For five years Soraya operated her own bellygram service in and around Wichita,
Kansas. She opened a studio (Aalim Bellydance Academy) where she taught classes
and choreographed routines for herself and her students. She traveled extensively
making guest appearances at clubs, restaurants, seminars and shows, in Dallas,
Houston, Oklahoma City, Kansas City, Omaha, Iowa City, Columbus, Washington,
D.C. to name just a few.
Upon moving to St. Louis, Soraya opened Aalim Bellydance Academy II and
again operated a bellygram service. In St. Louis, Soraya began sponsoring
the annual "Starfest" seminars and continued to teach classes, workshops,
and promote the dance. She traveled to Egypt and studied with Mahmoud Reda,
the Founder of the Reda Dance Troupe, and Sahar Zeki, both of Cairo, Egypt.
Soraya moved to Memphis, opened another studio and continued to teach, perform and sponsor
workshops.
Since moving to Oklahoma, Soraya has opened another studio and incorporated
it as Aalim Dance Academy, Inc., a Not-for-Profit corporation. The corporation
later attained the 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service.
The studio boasts four programs (Cabaret, Tribal Fusion, Gypsy Rom and Tahitian/Hula),
and four Professional Dance Troupes: Desert Stars, Tribal Stars, Gypsy Stars and Polynesian Stars.
The studio also offers a “Diva” class (for women over age 40) and children’s program of
free bellydance classes for the benefit of members' children (ages 5-11). The studio presently
has a complement of 150 students (all studio members performing under the name of the AALIM
Princesses/Desert Fire) and they perform at all local venues as well as making appearances
state and countrywide.
